L'isola di Gorée è stata per tre secoli il centro di partenza degli schiavi portati via dall'Africa: c'era addirittura un edificio adibito alla compravendita degli esseri umani da spedire nelle piantagioni dell'America. Chi si ammalava o faceva resistenza veniva gettato nell'Oceano in pasto ai pescecani. Nel 1978 l'Unesco ha dichiarato Gorée Patrimonio dell'Umanità. Da tutto il mondo migliaia di persone vi si recano ogni anno in pellegrinaggio.
